2023 Pukeko Matariki Kites

Let’s fly a kite.

The Pukeko children listened to the story The Seven Kites of Matariki. Following this beautiful story, we made Matariki kites out of natural materials. Kite making and flying them teaches children about science and weather patterns while  developing hand and eye coordination, kinesthetic awareness and gross motor skills. Above all flying a kite is fun and the sky is the limit.

Horo Matariki

Happy Matariki

2023 PIWAKAWAKA ART

Piwakawaka’s Kadinsky inspired Matariki fireworks pictures.

The Piwakawaka children have been very busy this term learning about colours, in both English and te reo Maori. For our art project we decided to weave this into our science topic and explore how primary colours are mixed to form secondary and tertiary colours. The children really enjoyed mixing the colours together to see what colours they could make and how they made them feel. Kadinsky exclaimed that “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”
We continued to look at Kandinsky's work, in particular his famous Concentric Circles painting.
The Piwakawaka children worked extremely hard to replicate this painting for themselves. Once they were finished; they cut the circles out and used them to represent Matariki fireworks in the sky. With their wonderful fine motor skills they drew a silhouette of Auckland city, cut it out and pasted it onto their picture. To complete their masterpieces the children sprinkled it with glitter and drew some more fireworks on. They were so excited and very proud of their finished artwork that now hangs with pride on our classroom wall.

2023 KAKAPO ART

Moment In Time!

Kakapo spent three weeks learning to write and publish some ‘Moment In Time’ pieces of work using Google Docs to publish.

A ‘Moment In Time’ is like a recount but it is happening right now.  We used present tense to describe what we could see, feel, smell, taste and hear.

Here are what some of Kakapo's students had to say:

‘It felt fun to publish my work and see it displayed.’  Charlotte

‘It was hard to spell the triple scoop words but I gave it a go!’  Jonathan

‘It took a long time to type it but I felt really proud when it was finished.’  Jake

‘It was complicated to change the font and sizes of the letters.’  Daniel

2023 KAKARIKI ART

In Week 2, Kakariki enjoyed celebrating the King's Coronation.  The children wrote about what they would do if they were a king or a queen for the day and they made beautiful, sparkly crowns complete with glitter, scrunched tissue paper, felt tip colouring and gems.  There was a lot of careful work needed to stay inside the lines, especially when painting with pva glue, but I think you will agree that Kakariki's crowns turned out royally.

2023 Weka Art

Weka have been hard at work in preparing their gifts-with heaps of love and care-for their special mums this Mother's Day.

They enjoyed the process of being able to make a gift using recyclable materials and using their own designs to create their own unique expression of love by adding acrylic paint to brighten it up with soft pastel colours.

Each child was eager to share what they love about their mums in detailed sentences with a beautiful illustration of them.

We thank our mums for all your love, selflessness, nurture, care, support and encouragement in all that we do.  You will 'always' be the light of our lives.

Happy Mother's Day!

Love, Weka

2023 Takahe Art

In religion we have embraced Te Reo Maori and the English translation of the sign of the cross, whilst depicting the traditional cross symbol, associated with our Catholic faith.

Takahe's spectacular 'Royal Self Portraits' involved blending colours for the skin tone. The colour palette included white, black, brown, yellow, beige and gold. By looking at our reflection we practiced guided drawing to establish the facial features. The background colours on the image were warm or cold, with radiating lines to the edge of the parchment paper. The students then selected a crown template that they traced, cut and glued to their self portraits. The final step was painting coloured glitter to the crowns, creating a unique portrait, to express individuality and the complexity of identity. Can you guess the Takahe boys and girls shown in the portraits displayed?

2023 Tui Art

Tui Class have worked exceptionally hard during Term 1 to produce these unique self portraits.  They began by using the ipads to photograph each other -they needed to ensure that they carefully considered the amount of light in the background to enable them to trace around the facial features easily.  After outlining their silhouettes with black vivid, they used dye to colour them.  Each student thought carefully about a logo to represent themselves and replicated it onto a background grid.  They coloured the symbols with oil pastel, and chose a contrasting dye colour to fill in the rest of the background.  Can you identify who the portraits belong to based on both the silhouette and the background images?

2023 MERC CAMP

On Monday the 6th of March, 38 very excited Year 6 students and their teachers headed out at 7:30am for Mt Carmel's first overnight camp to MERC!! The students had an amazing time being led by the talented staff of MERC. They did the Giants ladder, rock climbing, went on giant stand up paddleboards, raft building, outdoor survival and many other activities including a camp concert where they showed off their amazing talents! The students and teachers had a wonderful time at camp learning new skills, bonding and stretching themselves to try new things. Thank you to all the parents who helped out over the 2 days.

Please enjoy some students reflections on camp:

My favourite activity at camp was swimming out further into the ocean and paddleboarding because I love being out into the water and splashing, and just overall being outdoors. The easiest thing to do was to hangout with my friends, no matter what time or place it's just easy to hangout with friends. One of the hardest things to do personally was to build a raft, building a raft has difficulty with it because you have to knot the ropes and make the raft secure so that the raft doesn't break apart. A new skill I learnt was to paddle, paddling takes a lot of strength and power to do, once you paddle your arms get tired and weary. I saw beautiful sunsets, sunshine, sunrises, and waves. The combination with waves and the beautiful sky was fascinating and satisfying to watch. Hope you enjoyed my reflection on MERC 2023 Year 6 camp.

Jada

My favourite part about camp would be the rock climbing, it was really fun! I feel like I used my growth mindset by standing up in front of the class and performing by telling jokes because I normally find it very hard to speak in front of that many people. I learnt how to use a paddle while paddle boarding. The hardest thing I did was probably also getting up to tell jokes. I really enjoyed eating the baking, it was very yummy! It was very hard for me to sleep because I could hear very loud crickets and the crashing waves. I learnt how to survive in the water if anything happens. I learnt how long I can survive alone in the forest without water, food and shelter. After all, I had a great time at camp/MERC. I am so glad I went to MERC.

Zoe L

My most favorite moment at camp was doing the paddling it was so fun but my arms were very sore from paddling and my other favorite moment was building a hut but sadly we couldn't finished the other side of the hut and there was a enough room for 5 people to sit in and enough room for 2 people to sleep in.

The most challenging moment was the sleeping part when we were about to go to sleep.  My growth mindset was that I went far into the sea than I'm normally comfortable with and I climbed the giants ladder blindfolded.

Noeline

There are a LOT of activities at MERC but there are 4 main activities, the giants ladder, (which I didn’t do.) paddle boarding, rock climbing, and survival in water and on land. I conquered my first time in a school camp and also going into deep water. The easiest thing at camp was rock climbing. The most challenging thing for me was paddling the paddle board. I learned two types of knots, one was the reef knot, the other was the double 8 knot.My favourite thing on camp was playing with my friends. I love making sandcastles and being a fielder in cricket.

Kenjie

MERC was really fun because we had many rare activities that you wouldn't normally do as well a camp concert including comedy singing and more. I really enjoyed the giants ladder because it was a real challenge, because it was really big (hence the name.) We also went on a massive paddle board and jumped off, and invaded Toru ( there were four groups, Tahi, Rua, Toru, Wha) and we went under a capsized boat, because there was an air hole! We were taught how to tie a reef knot, a figure of eight knot and a figure of eight on a bite which is a figure of eight knot folded over.

2023 Ruru Art

Look at us standing tall!

We created these colourful self-portraits during the week. It gave us the time to study our eyes, nose, mouth, and the rest of our faces. We experimented with the use of various media and techniques.

The process of creating self-portraits teaches students to think deeply about identities, values, interests and beliefs. Students gain a better sense of belonging with diversity within their class to give them the knowledge to make a valued contribution to society.

Butterflies in Pukeko Class 2023

Pukeko class are enjoying learning of the life cycle of a butterfly. Look how observant these children are as they look carefully on the journey of transformation. Nature can teach us so much if only we stop, watch and look.
