Science In A Van

Our children had a LOT of fun when Science In a Van visited us during the last week of Term 1.  The Junior children were treated to a very enjoyable experiment of how to make a super bubble. The Senior children were introduced to the Periodic Table elements and the differences between Solids, Liquids and Gasses explained with a variety of exciting experiments involving dry ice and 'explosive' liquid nitrogen.

Mt Carmel Athletics Day

We were very lucky to have fabulous weather for our Athletics day which we had postponed from the previous week due to the huge amount of rainfall.  St Brigid won the Senior event held in the morning and St Mary won the Junior event held in the afternoon with the overall winner for both events being St Brigid.

World Water Day on Seven Sharp

World Water Day this year coincided with some of our classes having a special lesson delivered by an educator from Watercare.  Seven Sharp came along to find out more about it and to ask some of our Mt Carmel Kids on how we can all conserve water.  Here are our ‘Behind the Camera’ shots – click on one image to view as a Gallery.

Watercare Lessons

Did you know a seagull can drink saltwater as it has special glands to filter out the salt? Or that we each use an average of 180 litres of water per day?  That’s just two of the fun facts that the presenter from Watercare shared with our classes during their experiment sessions in Term 1. The children saw first hand the optical illusions that water creates when you look through it and they applied their learning to discover the reasons for these weird and wonderful changes.

Junior School ‘Ugly Bug Ball’

In Term 4 our Junior School took part in a very enjoyable Ugly Bug Ball. All the children dressed up as their favourite 'bug' and danced their hearts out on the stage. Afterwards the children ate some creepy crawly treats that they had made in the classroom: butterfly cakes, ladybug cookies, fruit caterpillar kebabs - there was plenty of choice thanks to the children's and the Classroom Teacher's efforts.

The Mt Carmel Kid

The Mt Carmel Kid is our school profile of the skills, dispositions and attitudes we want our graduate students to leave with. The ‘Kid’ was developed during discussions with the teachers, BOT and parents of Mt Carmel. The profile states:

  • I set goals, seek challenges and solve problems
  • I show love, care and respect for myself, others and God’s world
  • I live my Catholic faith and I am learning to be like Jesus
  • I serve people in our community
  • I am a learner wherever and whenever I can be
  • I strive to be positive and happy
  • I am self-confident, strong and resilient
  • I strive to be the best I can be
  • I show creativity, imagination and innovation
  • I am a collaborative team member who listens to others and contributes my own ideas
  • I am kind, caring and inclusive

The Mt Carmel Kid is a major focus for our students. It is not a technically a graduate profile but rather a profile we all work at from Year 1 through to Year 6. The statements are discussed in class and playground, and teased out as to what they might look like and sound like for students at varying age levels. By cultivating these wide range of traits, our students will be building the key resources of a confident learner with a strong Catholic identity that will serve them well as they move from Mt Carmel to their college education.

Pet Parade

A range of animals from Fr Sam’s exotic pigeons to huge dogs were brought to school for our Pet Parade. The students enjoyed parading and viewing the pets and this was followed by a prayer of thanks, a blessing and a sprinkling with Holy Water. Students, and parents (and pets!) enjoyed the parade immensely.
