2023 PIWAKAWAKA ART
June 22, 2023

Piwakawaka’s Kadinsky inspired Matariki fireworks pictures.
The Piwakawaka children have been very busy this term learning about colours, in both English and te reo Maori. For our art project we decided to weave this into our science topic and explore how primary colours are mixed to form secondary and tertiary colours. The children really enjoyed mixing the colours together to see what colours they could make and how they made them feel. Kadinsky exclaimed that “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”
We continued to look at Kandinsky's work, in particular his famous Concentric Circles painting.
The Piwakawaka children worked extremely hard to replicate this painting for themselves. Once they were finished; they cut the circles out and used them to represent Matariki fireworks in the sky. With their wonderful fine motor skills they drew a silhouette of Auckland city, cut it out and pasted it onto their picture. To complete their masterpieces the children sprinkled it with glitter and drew some more fireworks on. They were so excited and very proud of their finished artwork that now hangs with pride on our classroom wall.
